Bangladesh Cricket Board Announces Squad for Upcoming ODI Series Against Sri Lanka
After almost two years, left-handed opener Naim Sheikh has made a comeback to the Bangladesh national one-day set-up. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) recently revealed a 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, set to take place from July 2-8. The first two ODIs are scheduled to be played in Colombo, followed by the final match in Pallekele.
New Faces and Returning Players
Aside from Naim, the BCB has introduced several changes to the squad, including the inclusion of Litton Das, Shamim Patwary, Tanvir Islam, and Hasan Mahmud. Unfortunately, some familiar faces from the previous squad, such as Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah, have retired from ODI cricket. Additionally, Soumya Sarkar and Nasum Ahmed did not make it to the current squad. However, pace bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman have returned to the national team after recovering from injuries that kept them out of the T20Is.
BCB Chief Selector’s Comments
Gazi Ashraf Hossain, the chief selector of the BCB, praised Naim’s performance, stating, “I think he changed his batting intent and pattern and that is what we are looking for from the third opener as there is a way Tamim and Emon bats and we are looking someone to bat with similar aggression.” Ashraf also explained the decision to include five pace bowlers in the squad was due to workload management and the return of some players from injuries.
“You have to understand we have picked five pacers as some of them have workload management while others are returning from injuries,” Ashraf said. He further mentioned that Soumya Sarkar, who missed the Pakistan T20I series, was not included in the squad due to injuries last year and concerns regarding a back spasm.
