Montpellier vs Nice: Preview
Montpellier form analysis
La Paillade have struggled to build consistency across their last five Ligue 1 games, finding wins hard to come by. This stretch started positively with a 1-0 away victory at Metz secured thanks to an early Esteve goal. Hopes were raised further after fighting back to draw 1-1 at home with Marseille, as Fayad cancelled out Veretout’s opener for the visitors. However, a 2-0 defeat away at Brest next time out was a reality check. Despite enjoying plenty of possession there was a lack of cutting edge upfront.
A goalless home draw with Lille showed defensive improvements, but most recently a 2-1 loss away at Rennes highlighted issues creating chances. Savanier’s penalty was a mere consolation after Terrier and Kalimuendo struck early in each half. So while able to compete in games, manager Michel Der Zakarian is faced with an imbalance – solid enough at the back but lacking punch upfron. Improving chance creation and links between midfield and attack has to be the priority if Montpellier are to turn draws into wins over the vital weeks ahead.
Nice form analysis
Nice had endured an alarming slump in form, going across five games prior to defeating Metz 1-0 last time out. Their struggles started with a poor 3-1 loss away at Le Havre. Despite a late consolation, defensive issues cost Nice all game. A 2-0 home win over struggling Lens brought hope of a revival as striker Moffi’s brace made the difference. However, consecutive away defeats followed.
Losing 2-0 at fourth place Rennes could be accepted, but a goalless draw at relegation battling Brest highlighted problems in attack. With just one goal scored in three games, Nice lacked ideas and creativity going forward. The 1-0 home win over bottom side Metz last time out through a Guessand penalty settled the nerves, but it was still underwhelming. Manager Francesco Farioli will hope this hard fought victory provides confidence, as Nice still create enough chances but the end product must improve. Addressing their struggles on the road is also vital if Nice are to stay on the top table.
