Montpellier vs Lille: Preview
Montpellier form analysis
Montpellier’s recent Ligue 1 form has lacked inspiration. Producing limited results with no wins, three draws and a defeat over the last five league games. This underwhelming run began with a 2-0 loss away against Champions League-chasing Monaco on December 3rd in a match where they failed to produce a shot on target. Back-to-back 0-0 home draws followed against Lens and then Clermont Foot as Montpellier’s shot-shy attack continued to misfire.
Showing marginal progress, they edged past struggling Metz 1-0 away from home on December 17th courtesy of a Matteo Esteve goal before claiming an impressive 1-1 home draw on December 21st against league leaders Marseille, creating numerous chances. However, another blunt attacking display saw Montpellier suffer a recent 2-0 defeat away to Brest on January 14th, unable to contain their opponents as the manager’s long-term project endures some difficult days.
Lille form analysis
Lille’s recent Ligue 1 form has shown encouraging upwards momentum. Producing two wins and three undefeated results from their past five league matches. This steady progression began on December 3rd with a vital 2-0 home victory over strugglers Metz, with goals from Yazici and Jonathan David from the penalty spot proving decisive. However, back-to-back goalless draws followed away at Clermont Foot and at home against Lorient as Lille’s attack briefly stalled.
There were plenty of positives to take from a 1-1 away draw against champions PSG though, with a typically gritty defensive display deserving of David’s late equalizer. That foundation then catalyzed Lille’s recent resurgence, led by a 2-1 home win over Strasbourg and then an emphatic 3-0 thrashing of Lorient on January 14th with David again on target. After an inconsistent opening half of the season, these displays suggest the coach has instilled a steadily improving Lille capable of pushing back up the table.
