Mönchengladbach vs Stuttgart: Preview
Mönchengladbach form analysis
Borussia Mönchengladbach had impressed early on this season before a dip in form over their past five Bundesliga matches. On 25th November they lost a seven goal thriller at Borussia Dortmund 4-2 despite going two up early through Reitz and Koné. Things improved slightly on 2nd December with a 2-1 home win over Hoffenheim thanks to goals from Pléa and Ngoumou sandwiching Weghorst briefly levelling. However on 9th December, Mönchengladbach’s defensive issues emerged again during a 1-3 home loss to Union Berlin, Pléa’s late consolation rendering a mere footnote.
They rallied on 16th December to lead 2-1 at home over Werder Bremen through Reitz’s brace but conceded to Ducksch late on. Most recently on 21st December, defensive problems persisted in a dramatic 1-2 home loss to Frankfurt, scoring first through Wöber before crumbling late on to two stoppage time goals. Overall, Mönchengladbach must address concerning defensive frailties that have seen them concede 13 times over this run.
Stuttgart form analysis
Stuttgart had struggled for much of the early season but have found better form over their past five Bundesliga matches. On 25th November they claimed an excellent 1-2 away win at Eintracht Frankfurt courtesy of a perfect Undav brace to overturn Anton’s own goal leveler. They made it back-to-back wins on 2nd December, dispatching Werder Bremen 2-0 at home through Undav again before Guirassy’s late penalty. Stuttgart’s unbeaten run stretched to three games after grinding out a 1-1 home draw with Bayer Leverkusen on 10th December, going ahead through Führich before being pegged back by Wirtz.
However, it came to an end on 18th December as they were beaten comprehensively 0-3 at home by Bayern Munich, outclassed by goals from Kane, Kane again and Kim Min-jae. Most recently on 21st December, Stuttgart returned to winning ways with an important 3-0 home victory over Augsburg thanks to goals from Undav, Guirassy and Führich. Overall, Stuttgart seem to have turned a corner but must sustain improved form to pull away from relegation danger.
