Mitchell Starc Shines Ahead of India Test Series, Rattles Victorian Order in Sheffield Shield
Mitchell Starc has delivered a fierce reminder of his capabilities ahead of the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy, wreaking havoc in the Sheffield Shield with a six-wicket haul for New South Wales (NSW).
Starc’s standout performance comes at a crucial time as Australia prepares to take on India in a blockbuster Test series starting in late November.
The 34-year-old fast bowler was part of a star-studded contest at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), featuring renowned Test players Steve Smith and Scott Boland, alongside hopefuls like Marcus Harris and Sam Konstas.
While some of Starc’s NSW teammates faltered with the bat, Starc made a resounding impact with the ball, especially in Victoria’s second innings.
After posting figures of 1-35 from 19 overs in Victoria’s first innings, Starc showcased his vintage form on day three, claiming 6-81 from 17.5 overs. His lethal spell tore through Victoria’s batting lineup, putting NSW in a strong position despite their faltering top order.
At the end of the day’s play, Starc reflected on his performance and his readiness for the upcoming India series. “Wickets aside, I think the rhythm was there,” Starc said. “I felt probably the best I have felt for a while actually. Across the two innings, it feels like it’s in a good spot.”
However, NSW’s progress with the bat was shaky, with Steve Smith falling for a duck and captain Moises Henriques managing only 12 runs. Victoria’s Scott Boland continued his fine form, taking two key wickets, while youngster Fergus O’Neill backed up his first innings performance with another solid outing, adding to the pressure on the NSW batting lineup.
As NSW heads into the final day, they require 198 runs to win, with only four wickets remaining. Starc’s individual brilliance with the ball, though impressive, may not be enough to secure a win for his side, but it has certainly sent a strong message to India ahead of the summer Test series.
