Mitch Marsh was guest on Willow Talk Cricket Podcast this week. Australia’s new T20I captain who will be leaving for South Africa by the end of this week, talked about his batting resurgence, biggest bully in the Aussie dresing room and the story behind Mitch Marsh being nicknamed Bison.
Marsh revealed that the talk about captaining the the Australian side came during the Australian tour of England. Marsh said that he has loved watching Finchy (Aaron Finch) captain the side. His plan will be to keep the things simple and straight.
Finch was definitely a tactical captain, he knew how to make correct decisions on field but along with that, he always maintained a chilled and light hearted atmosphere in the team around the guys. Marsh has similar mindset to create a relaxed and chilled atmosphere so the guys in the team can enjoy the cricket.
The Ashes hundred was a kind of moral booster for Mitchell Marsh. He confessed that he struggled in past times because of his duality of his mind. One part of him was telling him that he’s not good at test cricket henceforth he should let it go. There was positive part in him which gave him confidence that he should try say the least.
That way he could look back at his journey with more satisfaction, however, the calibre of player he is, definitely he was going to make. How things panned for his game, almost elevating him to pinnacle of his career.
Who gave Mitch Marsh the nickname “Bison”?
When podcaster Adam Peacock asked him who gave him the nickname “Bison”? Marsh replied, “Jaosn ‘bloodie’ Gilespee”. The story goes back to Mitch Marsh’s first Australia A tour to Zimbabwe when Gilespee was coaching the side. Everyone thought that Marsh had a massive head but he is not sure what that is about.
According to Marsh, Andrew McDonald has the biggest head in the Australian cricket team. He calls it ginormous. When he was younger, someone told his that Bison head weights around 200kg. As a naive young boy, he asked everyone to not call him Bison and since then the progress is that it has become his nickname.
Who is the bully in the Australian cricket team?
“David Warner is the only person in my life that’s ever truly bullied me”, said Mitch Marsh. Going back to the past lane, Marsh said that when he came to Australian team, he couldn’t look at Warner without really getting abused by him. David Warner is 5’7″ and Mitch Marsh is 6’3″ yet all this happened.
Whenever Marsh went into the dressing room and said “hey bull”, Warner replied, “shut up mate.” How harsh but at one day, according to Marsh, he said to Warner that he had enough and asked if this soft bullying was over. Things turned out pretty good and both have been good mate ever since.
