Argentine forward Lionel Messi silenced clouding retirement rumors on Tuesday night, declaring his dedication to keep playing for Argentina beyond Sunday’s Copa America final.
“As I’ve said before, I intend to continue,” Messi said after Argentina’s 2-0 win over Canada. “I take it day by day, not thinking too far ahead. It’s something I feel every day. I’m 37 and only time will tell when it’s over.”
The important announcement comes in stark contrast to Messi’s emotional post-match speech at MetLife Stadium back in 2016, where he initially retired following a penalty shootout loss to Chile in the Copa America final.
He reversed his decision seven weeks later and has since been instrumental in Argentina’s success, scoring 54 goals in 73 appearances. Messi has now played 186 games for his country, contributing to their 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup triumphs.
Meanwhile, teammate Ángel Di María confirmed Sunday’s final against either Uruguay or Colombia at Miami Gardens will be his international swansong. The 36-year-old winger made his debut in 2008 and has amassed 31 goals in 144 appearances.
“It’s my last battle,” Di María said. “There’s nothing left to say. This is my last game. I want to thank all Argentines and this generation that allowed me to lift so many trophies.”
Di María, alongside Messi, played a pivotal role in Argentina’s recent international dominance, securing their third World Cup and 15th Copa America title. Messi offered a heartfelt tribute to his departing teammate.
“We’ve enjoyed him so much,” Messi said. “He’s always given his all and deserves to retire in a final.”
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni refused to give up hope of convincing Di María to stay on.
“We don’t want to dwell on negativity right now,” Scaloni said. “We have to focus on the final, and then we’ll see if we can change his mind.”
Scaloni emphasized Argentina’s commitment to Di María regardless of his decision.
“The door will always be open,” Scaloni said. “He can be part of this team for as long as he wants. If he chooses to retire but still wants to be involved, that would be fantastic. And if he wants to explore other options, I’d take him anywhere. The decision is entirely his.”
South American World Cup qualifying resumes in September, with each team playing 12 more matches. The 2026 World Cup final will be held at MetLife Stadium on July 19th.
