McDonald Defends Smith as Test Opener, Changes Unlikely Before India Series
Australia coach Andrew McDonald has thrown his support behind Steve Smith’s transition to Test opener, despite a lean run in the recent New Zealand series.
McDonald believes it’s too early to judge Smith’s performance and has indicated the batting order is unlikely to change before the crucial India series later this year.
Smith, widely regarded as one of the world’s best batsmen, took over the opening spot vacated by David Warner’s retirement in January. This move allowed all-rounder Cameron Green to slot into the crucial number four position.
McDonald defended the decision, highlighting the need for stability: “Imagine bringing in a new opener, giving them only four Tests, and then dropping them? That wouldn’t be fair.”
He echoed captain Pat Cummins’s confidence in Smith, emphasizing his place among Australia’s top six batsmen. McDonald pointed out the team’s strong batting lineup, suggesting it would be difficult for outside players to break in.
Praising Smith’s ability to adapt, McDonald said, “He’s a great player, and his problem-solving skills are a major asset. There will be discussions about his ideal position, but he’s embraced the challenge. Steve thrives on overcoming hurdles, and this recent dip in form will only motivate him for the upcoming India series.”
Smith’s Struggles at the Top: Backing or Rethink? Comments McDonald
McDonald confirmed Smith’s desire to open, stating, “He approached us about this role, and we believe he can excel in it.” With India looming on the horizon, Smith appears determined to prove himself in his new position.
Steve Smith’s batting form has dipped in recent times. Since transitioning to opener, he’s managed just one fifty in eight innings. His highest score, a 96, came in a losing effort against the West Indies at the Gabba.
Experts have suggested that Smith might be playing with an overly hasty approach, leading to his dismissals. Additionally, some have observed a tendency to cover the off stump excessively, resulting in caught-behind and LBW dismissals.
However, Steve Smith’s class is undeniable. He remains a legend of red-ball cricket. This is why coach Andrew McDonald has opted to back the new opener for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India on home soil.
