Mitch Marsh Defends Controversial World Cup Celebration: “No Disrespect Meant”
Mitch Marsh has finally addressed the controversy surrounding his World Cup celebration, where he was pictured with his feet on the World Cup trophy. The image went viral in India, leading to backlash from fans and even a call for a lifetime ban.
However, the Australian all-rounder insists he meant no disrespect. “There was obviously no disrespect meant in that photo at all,” he told SEN. “I haven’t given it too much thought, I haven’t seen a lot on social media even though everyone tells me it’s gone off. There’s nothing in that.”

Marsh’s celebration sparked outrage in India, where many fans felt it was disrespectful to their country. Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami said he was “hurt” by the photo, while a letter addressed to the Prime Minister and Sports Ministry demanded Marsh be banned from the country for life.
Despite the backlash, Marsh remains unapologetic. “Yeah I probably would do it again, to be honest,” he said. “There was obviously no disrespect meant in that photo at all.”
He also expressed concern for his teammates who had to remain in India for a T20I series just days after the World Cup final. “It was pretty outrageous for the guys that had to stay behind,” he admitted.
“There’s a fine line because we’ve got to respect the fact we’re playing for Australia and it’s a series against India which is always really big. But there’s also the human side of it, the boys have just won a World Cup and probably deserve to celebrate for a while and get home to their families.”

Marsh hopes that future tournaments will avoid scheduling such tight turnarounds between major events and subsequent series. “It’s an interesting one,” he said. “You’d hope there’s not too many of those series put on after big tournaments again.”
While the debate over Marsh’s celebration continues, there’s no denying his significant contribution to Australia’s World Cup victory. He scored 441 runs for the tournament, including a a remarkable ton against Pakistan at Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Marsh’s all-round abilities were crucial to Australia’s success, and his celebration, regardless of its reception, will be remembered as a part of their World Cup journey.
