Mitchell Marsh Frontrunner to Lead Australia at T20 World Cup: Coach Andrew McDonald
Australia coach Andrew McDonald has strongly hinted that all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will be named captain for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and USA.
Marsh has filled the T20I captaincy void left by Aaron Finch’s retirement, with wicketkeeper Matthew Wade also sharing the responsibility on occasion.
Pat Cummins, the current Test and ODI skipper, adds another option to the mix, having recently been named captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the IPL.
With his appointment as SRH captain, the speculation started upon his performance, he could replace Mitchell Marsh in upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

However, speaking after Australia’s Test series win over New Zealand, McDonald made it clear that Marsh is the frontrunner to lead the T20 side at the World Cup.
“The captaincy will be officially decided upon our return home,” McDonald acknowledged. “While discussions will take place, I believe all signs point towards Mitch. We just need to finalize a few details.”
“We’re very pleased with how he’s handled the T20 team,” McDonald continued. “He’s earned our confidence and we see him as the leader for the World Cup. It’s just a matter of finalizing the appointment.”
Marsh’s credentials were bolstered by his recent leadership of the T20I team to a dominant 3-0 series whitewash over New Zealand, preceding the Test series. With this in mind, it seems highly likely that he will be at the helm when Australia takes on Oman in their World Cup opener on June 6th in Barbados.
The 32-year-old Marsh previously announced his arrival on the big stage during Australia’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign in 2021. He was instrumental in their success, claiming Player of the Match honors in the final against New Zealand with a match-winning 77 not out.
However, Australia’s title defense on home soil last year ended in disappointment as they were eliminated during the group stage, with England ultimately clinching the trophy against Pakistan.
