Marseille vs Strasbourg: Preview
Marseille form analysis
Olympique Marseille have found excellent goalscoring form over their past five Ligue 1 matches. On 4th December, they grinded out a professional 2-0 home win over Rennes thanks to goals from Aubameyang’s early penalty and Ounahi. Things got even better on 7th December as they thrashed rivals Lyon 3-0 through strikes from Vítinha, Murillo and Aubameyang. Marseille’s ruthless streak continued on 11th December during an entertaining 2-4 away win at Lorient, going three up inside 33 minutes before Aubameyang added gloss after brief fightbacks from Faivre and Mendy.
Their free flowing form stalled slightly on 17th December but Marseille battled to a 2-1 home win over Clermont, going two ahead through Murillo and Harit before nervously holding on after Allevinah pulled one back. Most recently, they dropped points for the first time during this run as they drew 1-1 away at Montpellier on 21st December, going behind early before Veretout levelled midway through the second half. Overall, Marseille carry great attacking threat but occasional defensive nerves could undermine their European ambitions if not addressed.
Strasbourg form analysis
Strasbourg have shown inconsistent form over their past five Ligue 1 matches. On 2nd December, they suffered a disappointing 1-2 away defeat at Reims, pegged back twice through own goals from Perrin and Richardson before Gameiro’s late penalty consolation. Things improved on 8th December as they battled to a 1-1 away draw at Brest, responding through substitute Emegha after going behind to Le Douaron. Strasbourg’s form remained largely positive on 10th December, edging past Le Havre 2-1 at home in the league cup thanks to goals from Emegha and a last gasp Sylla winner after Salmier’s equalizer.
Inconsistent results returned in a 1-2 away win on 17th December at struggling Lorient, going two up through Bakwa and Gameiro before Dieng pulled one back. Most recently on 21st December, Strasbourg grinded out a vital 2-1 home win over Lille courtesy of two own goals either side of Sylla’s unfortunate concession. Overall Strasbourg have battled well recently but must improve consistency against mid table sides.
