Marnus Labuschagne Have a Secure Spot Despite Form Slump, Insists Australian Coach
Marnus Labuschagne is having struggles at the crease but this hasn’t shaken Australian coach Andrew McDonald’s faith in the star batsman’s future with the national team.
Marnus Labuschagne, who averaged a paltry 6.33 in the recent two-Test series against the West Indies, has endured a sustained dip in form, averaging his lowest since 2018/19 this summer.
Despite the concerning numbers, McDonald has thrown his weight behind Labuschagne and the entire top six, confirming their spots for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. “We are not in the mood to change the batting order,” he declared. “We have full faith in this unit to deliver success over multiple matches.”
McDonald emphasized the team’s recent triumphs as a testament to their collective strength. “We’ve won the World Test Championship, retained the Ashes, and dominated four out of five home Tests this summer,” he said.
“We see our batting unit as a team, and everyone plays their part. We expect fluctuations in form, but with this order, we can navigate most situations.”

The coach also expressed confidence in Labuschagne’s ability to bounce back, highlighting his stellar track record. “Marnus has been undone by specific bowling plans lately, but he’s a meticulous preparer and will analyze and adjust,” McDonald said. “He’s gone through lulls before, and we expect him to roar back.”
However, the concerns surrounding Labuschagne’s form are undeniable. His Test average has dropped from 60 to 50 in the past year, and he’s managed just one century in his last 18 matches.
This has led some fans to question his position in the lineup, despite the coach’s unwavering support. Australia has gone through plenty of chop and changes recently in their batting order.
With the pressure mounting, Labuschagne’s performance in New Zealand will be under intense scrutiny. Whether he can silence the doubters and rediscover his scoring touch remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: his spot in the Australian team is not yet up for debate.
