Harbhajan Singh, a former cricketer for India and a member of the Rajya Sabha, has called for “capital punishment” for all those responsible for the horrific act of parading two Manipuri women naked and reportedly gang-raping them. Tension rose in the Manipur hills following the release of a video on May 4 showing two women from one of the fighting factions being paraded naked by a few men from the opposing side, officials said here on Wednesday. Speaking about the event, Harbhajan tweeted, “To say that I’m outraged would be an understatement. I’m so furious that I’m numb. Because of what happened in Manipur, I feel ashamed right now. We should stop referring to ourselves as humans if the perpetrators of this heinous murder are not brought to justice and executed. The fact that this has occurred sickens me. Enough is enough. GOVT. MUST ACT.”
As not many athletes have yet commented on the incident, Harbhajan is among the first to respond from the sporting community.
A case of kidnapping, gang rape, and murder against unidentified armed men has reportedly been registered at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district, according to Manipur police. Every effort is being made to catch the culprits as soon as possible. More than 150 people have been killed and several others have been hurt as a result of ethnic violence in Manipur since May 3, when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was staged in the hill regions to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation.
The Meiteis make up around 53% of Manipur’s population and are primarily concentrated in the Imphal Valley. The tribal population includes the Nagas and Kukis. This makes up 40% and is mainly concentrated in the hill areas.
