Manchester United overcame rivals Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley Stadium on May 26, winning their 13th FA Cup title.
Manchester United win over City to clinch 13th FA Cup Title
The encounter, which many expected to be controlled by Premier League champions City, instead showed United’s resolve and youthful energy, as shown by goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Maino.
Erik ten Hag’s United team exuded unity and tactical smart from the start, which had been missing during the 2023-2024 season.
Although coming into the match with an injury-ravaged lineup, United managed to upset City’s rhythm early on.
Bruno Fernandes and exceptional Mainoo provided strength to the Red Devils’ midfield, which was without the coated Casemiro. Sofyan Amrabat also performed admirably.
The match changed dramatically in the 30th minute when City’s Josko Gvardiol made a defensive error, allowing United to score their first goal. Gvardiol’s mistaken header over his keeper, Stefan Ortega, allowed Garnacho to score into an empty net, bringing United fans into raptures.
This unexpected advantage was further strengthened by a second goal shortly before halftime. Marcus Rashford’s beautiful long ball found Garnacho, who expertly passed to Fernandes, setting up Mainoo for a regulated finish that doubled United’s lead in the 39th minute.
City, headed by Pep Guardiola, struggled to recover their normal control in the first half. The odd defensive setup, which included Nathan Ake, Josko Gvardiol, and John Stones instead of Ruben Dias, failed to solidify City’s backline.
Against the star-studded attack, which included Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, United’s defense stood firm, helped by the return of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.
The second half saw City try a comeback, especially following the introduction of Jeremy Doku. His dangerous presence prompted several attacking plays, but United’s defence and goalkeeper Andre Onana held up to the challenge.

Onana’s heroics in goal kept City at bay, saving important shots from Kyle Walker and Julian Alvarez.
City’s persistence finally paid off in the 87th minute when Doku’s strike reduced the deficit. However, it proved to be too little, too late, as United managed to maintain their lead until the final whistle.
This victory not only marks United’s 13th FA Cup triumph but also secures their place in the UEFA Europa League next season.
The win provides a silver lining to what has otherwise been a challenging season for the Red Devils. For Erik ten Hag, this triumph is a significant vindication amid speculation about his future at the club.
United’s win in the FA Cup final at Wembley is a testament to their ability to rise to the occasion and deliver when it matters most.
The players’ spirited performance against a formidable City side will be remembered as a classic chapter in the storied rivalry between the two Manchester giants.
As the celebrations continue, United fans will hope this victory marks the beginning of a return to consistent success on the field.
