Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United’s talismanic captain, has hinted at a likely change in his future plans, showing that he will decide on his next move only after this summer’s European Championship with Portugal.
The midfield maestro, who has been crucial to the Red Devils since his arrival, pointed out his unalterable level on the upcoming FA Cup Final against archrivals Manchester City on May 25th, as well as his responsibilities to represent Portugal in the Euros, which are hosted by Germany.
Fernandes’ future at Manchester United has been a topic of much speculation, with rumours circulating that he may leave the club. However, the 29-year-old dismissed any instant thoughts, stating that his focus is solely on the impending difficulties.
Bruno Fernandes to mull over future post-Euros 2024
Addressing queries about his future, Fernandes candidly stated,
“I don’t have thoughts for other things at the moment. It doesn’t just depend on me.”
He iterated that any decision regarding his Premier League tenure would have to wait until after the Euros.
Despite the uncertainty, Fernandes conveyed his contentment with the recognition and support he feels within the United setup.
“A player always has to want to be here, but at the same time, you have to want him to stay. At the moment, I feel there’s that on both sides,” he affirmed.
Acknowledging the current season’s shortcomings, both individually and collectively, Fernandes stressed his desire for competitiveness and success. Having secured only one trophy, the Carabao Cup, since his arrival from Sporting CP, the Portuguese international expressed his hunger for more silverware.
In March, Fernandes had reportedly communicated his desire to stay at United to the club’s new owners, affirming his commitment despite the challenging season. However, he emphasized the importance of competitiveness and winning in his decision-making process.
Fernandes’ prolific contributions on the field have been evident, with 15 goals and 11 assists in 45 appearances for United this season. However, the team’s underwhelming performance, culminating in a sixth-place position in the Premier League and an early exit from the Champions League, adds a layer of complexity to his considerations.
With an option for United to extend his contract for an additional season, the coming months are poised to be crucial in determining Fernandes’ future at the club. As fans eagerly await the denouement of both domestic and international campaigns, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on the enigmatic midfielder’s next move.
