Mainz vs Wolfsburg: Preview
Mainz form analysis
FSV Mainz had shown promising early season form, but have struggled for results over their past five Bundesliga matches. On 26th November they were held to a 1-1 home draw by Hoffenheim despite going ahead through Richter before conceding to Skov. Things got worse on 3rd December with a disappointing 0-1 home loss to Freiburg after conceding to Gregoritsch. Mainz stopped the rot on 10th December by holding FC Köln to a goalless draw away, but their struggles in front of goal continued on 16th December with a 0-1 home defeat to Heidenheim, undone by Pieringer’s early strike.
They showed some attacking threat on 20th December against Borussia Dortmund and arguably deserved more than a 1-1 away draw, going behind early to Brandt before van den Berg levelled. Overall, Mainz have lacked attacking spark recently with just two goals during this spell, often limited to low scoring games. Boosting productivity in offense over the winter break is crucial if they are to pull away from the relegation battle.
Wolfsburg form analysis
Wolfsburg have struggled for positive results over their last five Bundesliga matches. On 25th November they claimed an excellent 2-1 home win over RB Leipzig thanks to goals from Wind and Rogério either side of Poulsen’s equalizer. However, form dipped alarmingly on 2nd December during a 1-3 home loss to Bochum, Svanberg’s reply coming between strikes from Osterhage, Bernardo and Antwi-Adjei. Things didn’t improve on 9th December as they succumbed to a 0-1 home defeat to Freiburg after conceding to Gregoritsch.
Lean results continued on 16th December with a 0-1 home loss to Darmstadt, undone by Majer’s second half winner. Most recently on 21st December, defensive issues persisted in a 1-2 home loss to Bayern Munich, unable to build on Arnold’s goal as Musiala and Kane sealed Bayern’s comeback win. Overall, Wolfsburg must address defensive problems that have seen them concede 10 times over this poor spell.
