Lyon vs Rennes: Preview
Lyon form analysis
Lyon’s recent form in Ligue 1 has been inconsistent. Two wins, one draw and two losses from their past five league matches. This fluctuating run started with a humbling 3-0 thrashing away to rivals Marseille on December 7th in a match where Lyon failed to register a shot on target. However, they responded emphatically by beating Toulouse 3-0 at home three days later. Led by a superb hat-trick from captain Alexandre Lacazette.
Building momentum, Lyon then ground out a vital 1-0 away win at Monaco on December 16th thanks to Jeffinho’s late strike. Lacazette was on target again on December 21st as Lyon edged past Nantes 1-0 at home. But Lyon then came crashing back down to earth recently with an embarrassing 3-1 defeat away to Le Havre in the Coupe de France on January 14th. Outplayed from start to finish despite Lacazette briefly leveling. Lyon has struggled for any sort of consistency in performances and results.
Rennes form analysis
Rennes’ recent Ligue 1 form has been reasonably solid if unspectacular. Two wins, two draws and a defeat across their past five league matches. This steady run began negatively as Rennes fell 2-0 away to rivals Marseille on December 4th in a match where they failed to produce a shot on target. However, Rennes showed resilience by responding with a narrow 2-1 home loss to high-flying Monaco three days later, with Benjamin Bourigeaud’s late penalty a consolation.
Further signs of progress came in back-to-back goalless draws away to Toulouse and at home against Lorient on December 17th and 21st respectively. Building momentum, Rennes secured an important 3-1 away win at struggling Clermont on December 28th thanks to goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Désiré Doué and a Bourigeaud penalty. This upward trend continued recently as Rennes consolidated their place in mid-table with a professional 2-0 home win over Nice on January 14th.
