Luton vs Newcastle United: Preview
Luton form analysis
Town came into this run of fixtures on the fringes of the race for promotion to the Premier League in the Championship. They made an excellent start by defeating top flight Crystal Palace in the League Cup at home on November 25th thanks to second half goals from young defender Mengi and veteran striker Brown. However, Luton came back down to earth just four days later away at Brentford, outclassed in a 1-3 defeat despite Brown temporarily reducing the arrears. Bouncing back impressively, Luton pushed title chasing Arsenal all the way in a seven-goal League Cup thriller on December 6th.
Goals from Gbamin, Adebayo and Barkley gave Luton successive leads before succumbing late on to an exhilarating 3-4 defeat. Luton’s cup heroics ultimately proved futile as defending champions Man City ended their run four days later courtesy of strikes from Bernardo and Grealish for a 1-2 win. Overall, the overachievers have done themselves proud against Premier League titans, but need to quickly refocus attention on somehow ensuring survival to realise Premier League dreams.
Newcastle United form analysis
Newcastle United came into this run of fixtures pushing for European football continuing their Saudi-backed resurgence under manager Eddie Howe. However thumping Chelsea 4-1 at home on November 25th served notice of their top four ambitions with Isak, Lascelles, Joelinton and youngster Gordon all scoring before James saw red. Building on this platform, clinical Newcastle ground out an impressive 1-0 home win over Manchester United four days later thanks to Gordon’s strike. But a reality check followed in their next match away at struggling Everton where despite resting key men, Newcastle turned in a limp display, easily beaten 0-3.
Stung into action, Howe named a full strength side away at UEFA Champions League-chasing Tottenham Hotspur but Newcastle were outclassed again, thumped 1-4 on December 10th despite Joelinton’s late consolation. However, Newcastle produced the perfect response by dismantling overachievers Fulham 3-0 in an excellent performance at home on December 16th, to showcase their qualities after Jimenez’s early red card. Overall when on song Newcastle have proven genuine top four credentials, but maintaining consistency holds the key to realizing their lofty ambitions.
