Lucknow Super Giants Name Nicholas Pooran New Vice-Captain
The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) announced on Thursday that West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran has been appointed as their new vice-captain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.
Pooran takes over the role from all-rounder Krunal Pandya, who served as stand-in captain for a few matches in the previous two seasons. Pandya led the team to three wins and two losses, with one match ending in a draw, during his captaincy stints.
LSG captain KL Rahul presented Pooran with the vice-captain’s jersey, bearing number 29, at an event on Wednesday. Rahul, who is currently recovering from an injury in his right quadriceps, is expected to be available for the season opener on March 22nd, according to ESPNcricinfo.
The Super Giants’ first match is scheduled for March 24th against the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. Pooran played one of most destruction innings of IPL 2023 against Royal Challengers Banglore when he scored 62 off 19 balls.

“I’m truly honored to be named vice-captain of the Lucknow Super Giants,” said Pooran in a statement released by the team. “I’m looking forward to working closely with KL Rahul and contributing to the team’s success in the upcoming season.”
The Trinidadian cricketer, known for his explosive batting and wicket-keeping skills, has been a key player in the T20 format globally. He joined the Lucknow Super Giants in 2023 after playing for various teams, including Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad, in previous IPL seasons.
During his first season with LSG, Pooran scored 358 runs in 15 matches with an impressive strike rate of 172.94, including two half-centuries.
Pooran has also held leadership positions in various teams, including the West Indies national team. This will be his first experience as a vice-captain in the IPL.
The Lucknow Super Giants are confident that Pooran’s experience and leadership qualities will be valuable assets to the team as they look to build on their success from their previous seasons.
