Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr. are set to compete for the vacant IBF lightweight title. The match was originally scheduled for 2022, and the two fighters had planned to face off when Lambosos still held three lightweight titles. However, Lomachenko chose to remain in Ukraine during the early stages of Russia’s invasion of the country. Meanwhile, the Greek-Australian faced Devin Haney twice, resulting in defeat. Haney successfully defended his lightweight titles against Lomachenko and achieved a close decision before moving up in weight to claim another world title.
The fight will take place in Perth
According to ESPN, the Vasiliy Lomachenko-George Kambosos fight for the vacant IBF lightweight title is set to take place in Perth on May 12. The fight will be broadcast on ESPN in America on the night of May 11. Kambosos is coming to this fight after a controversial decision victory over Maxi Hughes last June. Two judges’ scores were in Kambosos’ favor, with the third judge scoring a draw of 114-114. Despite the controversial decision, the 30-year-old fighter became the mandatory challenger for the IBF title, setting the stage for a bout with “Hi-Tech.”
Moloney Twins will appear on the undercard
The Moloney twins, Jason and Andrew, are scheduled to appear on the undercard. Jason retained his bantamweight title with a thrilling majority-decision win over Saul Sanchez on Saturday night before the announcement. Moloney’s participation in the upcoming event is dependent on the healing of an injury he sustained to his right eyebrow during his match against Saul Sanchez last Saturday, January 13.
Lomachenko desired a rematch with Haney
Moloney showed great resilience as he fought and earned a majority decision win on the Beterbiev-Smith undercard. The Ukrainian Lomachenko expressed his desire for a rematch with Devin Haney, but “The Dream” had problems making the 135 limit and talked about changing weight classes before his undisputed title defense. An alternative offer for Lomachenko was a bout with the WBC lightweight champion, Shakur Stevenson. However, he ultimately chose to face George Kambosos for the vacant IBF title.
