Liverpool’s young right-back Calvin Ramsay is set to embark on a new chapter of his career with a season-long loan to Wigan Athletic, marking his third loan move since joining Liverpool in 2022.
Calvin Ramsay Joins Wigan Athletic on Season-Long Loan
The 20-year-old Scot, who turns 21 in July, has faced a challenging journey since his transfer from Aberdeen, with injuries severely limiting his playing time.
Ramsay’s move to Wigan comes after two less-than-ideal loan stints last season. Initially, he joined Preston North End but struggled to secure regular playing time, leading to an early termination of his loan in January.
A subsequent move to Bolton did not yield better results, leaving Ramsay with just under 10 hours of football action over the past two years.
Liverpool and Ramsay both hope that this loan to Wigan will be different. Wigan’s manager, Shaun Maloney, expressed optimism about the new addition to his squad.
“Calvin is an excellent profile who will bring aggression and attacking talent from both the right and left side of defence,” Maloney stated on Wigan’s official website.
“He is extremely motivated to help our team achieve success this season and will join us on day one of pre-season.”
This loan deal is part of a growing relationship between Liverpool and Wigan, following successful loans of James Balagizi and Luke Chambers over the past year.
Chambers, in particular, had a notable spell, starting 17 out of 18 matches after his January arrival and contributing with a goal and three assists. Liverpool hopes Ramsay can replicate Chambers’ success and gain valuable match experience.
The young defender’s move to the League One side offers him a fresh start and an opportunity to revive his flagging fortunes at Anfield.
Ramsay’s potential has been evident since his days at Aberdeen, where his performances caught the eye of Liverpool scouts.
However, his progress has been hampered by injuries, preventing him from establishing himself in Liverpool’s senior team.
Despite the setbacks, Ramsay remains highly regarded for his versatility and attacking prowess from the back. He can play on both sides of the defence, a quality that will undoubtedly benefit Wigan throughout the upcoming season.
With a full pre-season under his belt, Ramsay aims to integrate quickly and make a significant impact at the Brick Community Stadium.
As Ramsay gears up for this new challenge, Liverpool fans will watch closely, hoping this loan spell will be the catalyst he needs to fulfill his potential.
The Reds’ faithful understand the importance of regular playing time for young talents, and a successful season at Wigan could pave the way for Ramsay’s future contributions at Anfield.
Good luck to Calvin Ramsay on his new journey with Wigan Athletic. Here’s to a season filled with growth, success, and plenty of game time.
