The Indian Premier League (IPL) was first held in 2008, and since then, it has revolutionized franchise-based leagues around the world. Some cricket players who were there when it first started still play as the competition gets ready for its 17th edition in 2024.
Several gifted players put their names in the auction during the league’s inaugural season. Among them was Virat Kohli, who joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and the legendary MS Dhoni of the Chennai Super Kings.
Among the other faces is Rohit Sharma, who began his career in 2009 with the Deccan Chargers before turning into a Mumbai Indians mainstay. The all-round player Ravindra Jadeja began his career with the Rajasthan Royals and is currently with CSK. While Ravichandran Ashwin, who will return to Rajasthan in 2024, graced the Chennai Super Kings.
Veterans of IPL 2024:
Over the years, Shikhar Dhawan, Piyush Chawla, and Amit Mishra have all played for different teams. The first Indian to score a century was Manish Pandey in 2009, and Ajinkya Rahane, who is versatile, has played for several teams, including the Chennai Super Kings, where he is currently playing.
The seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik will play for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2024 after making his IPL debut with the Delhi Daredevils in 2008. After beginning their careers with the Kolkata Knight Riders, Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha have played for a number of different teams. Swapnil Singh and Rishi Dhawan are two more players who have represented multiple teams.
Virat Kohli is the only one of the 15 players who has been a member of the same team from the beginning. Over the years, some have changed their bases a few times. Eight teams competed in the inaugural edition, but two more teams have since been added.
One of the biggest franchise cricket competitions in the world is the Indian Premier League (IPL), and other nations are now modelling their franchise competitions after the IPL. The five-time champion Chennai Super Kings and the uncrowned Royal Challengers Bengaluru will square off on March 22 in Chennai to begin the 2024 season.
