LeBron James will be Team USA’s male flag bearer in the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games on Friday night. The announcement came from fellow NBA player and teammate Steph Curry, adding another milestone to James’ illustrious career.
James, the Los Angeles Lakers star, expressed his gratitude for the honor. “It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” James said in a statement. “For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians, and so many people across the country with big aspirations. Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”
James is the first male basketball player to serve as a flag bearer for Team USA, following in the footsteps of women’s basketball stars Dawn Staley at Athens 2004 and Sue Bird at Tokyo 2020.
The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee will announce the female flag bearer on Tuesday.
James’ Olympic career has been marked by significant achievements, including three Olympic medals: a bronze at Athens 2004, and golds with the ‘Redeem Team’ at Beijing 2008 and London 2012. He chose not to participate in the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Games, where Team USA still secured gold medals.
Steph Curry, in the nomination video, praised James’ career and contributions. “We understand how much of an honor it is to be in that position, and I think Bron’s entire career, on and off the court, speaks for itself as him being worthy of that honor,” Curry said. “He has represented what it means to be excellent both on and off the court. His commitment to service and uplifting the community in all ways that he knows how has been a lifelong passion. And the work speaks for itself.”
Team USA will kick off their men’s Olympic basketball campaign against Serbia on July 28, followed by matches against Japan and South Sudan. A victory in this year’s men’s competition would mark a fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal for the United States.
