Leaked video of Shreyas Iyer: On the opening day of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final match against Baroda, Mumbai found themselves in trouble at 90-4. With the departure of their best batsmen, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shams Mulani, it was up to young Musheer Khan to lead his team out of the woods.
After being away from the first class for over a year, the 18-year-old was returning. He had only played four games at this level before. Musheer was undefeated at 128 at stumps on the first day, while Mumbai finished with a 248-5 total.
At the U-19 World Cup in South Africa, the young player—the brother of Sarfaraz Khan—made a lasting impression by amassing 360 runs in seven games, including two hundreds. However, this was a knockout match in first-class cricket. Musheer was ready to play. Musheer might not be in the starting lineup if Shreyas Iyer had been active. It turned out that Mumbai and Musheer benefited from Iyer’s back pain.
Iyer’s case, however, has been peculiar. The middle-order batter, who has been benched for the last three Test matches against England, was filmed on Friday during an IPL promotional shoot. The video was leaked and went viral on social media.

He was heard saying to his stylist/costume expert in the video, “What kind of dhoti is this, and how come aysa toh hum nahi pahenta hai? We don’t wear this kind). “Hopefully, there won’t be any mistakes.” He continued, attempting to control the dhoti in a Bengali manner. Iyer appeared to be in full IPL mode already.
He was scheduled to play against Baroda in the Ranji quarterfinal. However, Iyer apparently withdrew due to back pain. But shortly after, the player was deemed “fit” in an email from Nitin Patel, the National Cricket Academy’s head of sports science and medicine. Therefore, Iyer appears to have rejected the Ranji Trophy despite BCCI secretary Jay Shah’s instruction.
Just a few days prior, Shah instructed all players under central contract to participate in red-ball domestic cricket, unless they were either on the Indian team or undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA.
He told reporters, “You have to play red-ball domestic cricket if your coach, captain, and the chairman of the selection committee ask you to, and I have already told everyone over the phone and will write a letter tomorrow. We will not accept any justification from the young players who are capable of withstanding the rigours of multi-day cricket.”

The secretary of the BCCI continued, “I won’t single out anyone, This is a message for all individuals. Everyone needs to participate in the game. The chairman of selectors may answer a call at any time.” Shah then put pen to paper on the letter.
Still, there is resistance. not just from Iyer but from a couple of other people as well, like Ishan Kishan. For reasons unrelated to cricket, the wicketkeeper-battler had returned from India’s tour of South Africa.
Since then, he has disappeared. This season, he hasn’t appeared in any Ranji games for Jharkhand. According to some reports, the 25-year-old is preparing for the IPL by spending time at Kiran More’s academy in Baroda and preparing for an office T20 league.
The cricket board’s directive appears to have been noted by the BCCI, and it is rumoured that Iyer and Kishan may lose their central contracts as a result. Both are young men, and there have been rumours of mental exhaustion in Kishan’s case.
These are sensitive matters that need to be handled carefully. However, the players appear to be avoiding direct communication and openness, and their behaviour thus far has been blatantly disrespectful of the Ranji Trophy.
The BCCI is an organization that supports cricketers. Every player’s case is given compassionate consideration, and the cricket board is not vengeful. However, when a line is crossed, the appropriate response is required immediately to avoid sending the wrong message and creating a negative precedent.
For instance, Iyer and Kishan are free to choose not to play domestic cricket if they are content with their IPL contracts. The BCCI should be discouraged from selecting a national team in any format by ignoring India’s top domestic competition.
Shivam Dube setback:
Big hitter Shivam Dube has also been ruled out of the Mumbai team’s match against Baroda, which is another major blow. The tall hitter will not play in the quarterfinals after suffering an injury in Mumbai’s most recent league-stage match against Assam. Dube has performed incredibly well at bat throughout the competition.
In the six innings he has played this season, the Southpaw has amassed two hundreds and two half-hundreds. He has struck out at 82.38 and scored runs at an average of 67.83.
Mumbai has added Musheer Khan to their 16-man squad for the elimination match. Khan stunned everyone with his batting prowess in the recently concluded under-19 World Cup. Ajinkya Rahane will remain the team’s leader, but other notable players will also be contributing, including Shardul Thakur, Prithvi Shaw, and Dhawal Kulkarni.
