Lazio vs Roma: Preview
Lazio form analysis
SS Lazio have shown inconsistent form in their last five Serie A matches. On 9th December, they were held to a disappointing 1-1 home draw against Verona, conceding an early 23rd minute goal before Henry rescued a point in the 70th minute. Things got worse on 18th December as Lazio succumbed to a 0-2 home loss to Inter Milan, unable to respond after conceding goals in the 40th and 66th minutes. However, Lazio bounced back well on 22nd December, earning an important 0-2 away win over Empoli thanks to goals from Guendouzi and Zaccagni in the 9th and 67th minutes.
Their good form continued on 30th December with a 3-1 home win over Frosinone, overturning Soulé’s 58th minute penalty concession through goals from Castellanos, Isaksen and Patric. Most recently on 7th January, Lazio earned a vital 1-2 away win against Udinese. Responding well after Walace’s 59th minute equalizer through Vecino’s late winner to grab the three points. Overall, Lazio have shown the capacity to beat midtable and lower opposition but need to improve results against direct rivals if they are to compete for a Champions League place this season. Addressing inconsistencies and tightening defensively could help stabilize their form moving forward.
Roma form analysis
Roma have shown inconsistent results over their past five Serie A fixtures. On 11th December, they were held to a disappointing 1-1 home draw by Fiorentina despite Lukaku giving them an early 5th minute lead, conceding to Martinez Quarta in the 66th minute. Things got worse on 17th December with a 0-2 away loss to Bologna, going down to goals from Moro and an own goal from Kristensen in the 37th and 49th minutes. However, Roma bounced back on 24th December with an important 2-0 home win over title challengers Napoli. Thanks to late goals from Pellegrini and Lukaku in the 76th and 90th minutes.
Their positive momentum didn’t continue as on 31st December they suffered a narrow 0-1 away loss to Juventus after conceding to Rabiot in the 47th minute. Most recently on 8th January, Roma drew 1-1 at home against Atalanta. Responding through Dybala’s 39th minute penalty after going behind early to Koopmeiners’ 8th minute strike. Overall, Roma have struggled for consistent results and will need to improve their defensive stability after conceding in 4 of their last 5 games if they are to solidify their position in the Champions League places.
