Newly Crowned Australian Open Champion, Lakshya Sen, Overcomes Post-Olympic Struggles to Rediscover Love for Badminton
After enduring the heartbreak of finishing fourth at the Paris Olympics, 24-year-old Lakshya Sen found himself grappling with a loss of motivation and a seed of doubt. However, through renewed focus on physical conditioning and mental clarity, the Indian badminton player was able to reignite his passion for the sport.
Struggles Post-Olympics
Returning from Paris, where he narrowly missed out on a medal, Lakshya faced a challenging period. “Post the Olympics, it was a little bit hard for me to find motivation again to train really hard. I took a break for some time. I was not doing so well,” he shared with the media.
Dealing with first-round exits and mental hurdles, Lakshya’s downward spiral continued as he battled a persistent back issue during tournaments in Singapore and Indonesia. Seeking treatment at hospitals and the Athlete Performance Centre in Salzburg, Austria, he worked to strengthen his affected areas physically while also combating mental fatigue.
Reigniting the Flame
The turning point for Lakshya came when he shifted his focus from chasing outcomes to concentrating on the finer details of training. Collaborating with mental trainer Mon Brockman, he found renewed direction and motivation.
“In the last year, I’ve been just focusing on the small things and not thinking too much about the results. When I started working with my mental trainer, I think it was important that I find that motivation again. I think somewhere this year, I could again really focus and get back into full training,” he explained.
Adapting and Improving
Lakshya acknowledged the need for improvement and adaptation in his game to stay ahead. Working on expanding his shot-making and footwork in defense, he aimed to stay unpredictable on the court while minimizing risky plays to prevent injuries and ensure a long career.
“It’s been almost like 3-4 years in the senior circuit, and people start to read your game. My coach told me that you have to find a little bit more variation from the net. Maybe hold a little bit on the shots. So I worked a lot on the technical part of the game,” Lakshya shared.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, Lakshya expressed his excitement for the upcoming season and the challenges it may bring. “The competition is really high, and there are a lot of good players.
