France’s Kylian Mbappe has addressed fans and expressed optimism after breaking his nose during their 1-0 victory over Austria in the Euro 2024 opener.
Despite initial fears that the injury could prematurely end his tournament, the star forward remains hopeful about his swift return to the pitch.
Mbappe sustained the injury after a collision with Austria defender Kevin Danso’s shoulder. Bloodied and in visible discomfort, he was promptly taken to a hospital in Düsseldorf for medical evaluation.

Fortunately, the results were encouraging. Doctors managed to reset the bone without requiring surgery, allowing the French captain to keep his sights set on continuing in the competition.
In a light-hearted social media post following his hospital visit, Mbappe humorously inquired, “Any ideas for masks?” This playful remark reflects his positive mindset amidst the setback.
The French Football Federation (FFF) quickly released a statement confirming Mbappe’s injury and outlining the immediate steps for his recovery.
“Kylian Mbappe returns to the base camp of the French national team. Mbappe suffered a broken nose during the second part of the Austria-France match held this Monday in Düsseldorf,” the statement read.
“The captain of France was treated first by the medical staff and Dr. Franck Le Gall, who diagnosed him with a nose fracture. Mbappe will receive treatment in the next few days, but he will not undergo surgery in the immediate future.
A mask will be made for him so that the number 10 of the French national team can prepare for his return to the competition after a period dedicated to treatment.”
This official communication starkly contrasts with the somber mood of France’s head coach Didier Deschamps in the post-match press conference. “He’s not doing well,” Deschamps admitted.
“His nose got badly hit, that’s for sure. We need to check it out, but it seems quite complicated. At this stage, I can’t answer. I don’t know if he will play again.”
Despite Deschamps’ initial uncertainty, Mbappe’s teammates remain supportive and hopeful. N’Golo Kante, who was named man of the match, shared his concern but also his optimism.
“We were worried to see Kylian leave the pitch like that. We don’t know what the situation is, but we want to see him back soon,” Kante said.
After leaving the hospital just after 1 a.m., Mbappe, masked to conceal his injuries, returned to the team base. The French squad now eagerly awaits his recovery as they prepare for their next match against Holland in Leipzig on Friday night.
Mbappe’s resilience and determination to play again highlight his importance to the team and the spirit he brings to the game.
As fans and teammates rally around him, Mbappe’s hopeful outlook and the medical team’s swift action provide a beacon of hope that the French star will be back on the field, leading his team through Euro 2024.
