Former UFC star Khabib Nurmagomedov is embroiled in a tax controversy with the Russian Federal Tax Service, that claims he owes more than $3.3 million due to discrepancies found in his business. Due to this, a complete audit of his various companies was conducted and some assets were confiscated. Amid these legal troubles, rumors have emerged that Khabib has given up his Russian citizenship to become a citizen of the United Arab Emirates. Although not confirmed by him, the move may be a strategic response to his tax problems, as residents of UAE do not pay personal income taxes.
The UAE rarely grants citizenship even to its long-term residents, but they do welcome individuals with extraordinary talent in sports. This is the reason “The Eagle” might be given UAE citizenship. He has a great influence there and it is evident through a gym in Abu Dhabi that is inspired by him.
Khabib’s team is denying the allegations
However, Nurmagomedov’s team has denied allegations of tax evasion, stating that information about tax fraud is false and that he is involved in various business projects. Khabib continues to engage in business projects in order to develop them. Some reports indicate that the tax agency’s inquiries stem from the Russian’s investments in the Middle East. It is unclear whether the tax issues and possible changes to Khabib’s citizenship are linked.
The Eagle likely has lack of support from Russian govt
However, Nurmagomedov will not be the first UFC star to receive UAE citizenship. Another Russian fighter, Khamzat Chimaev, has reportedly also gotten UAE citizenship. This situation has raised questions about Khabib’s relations with the Russian government. He is one of the most successful athletes, but still, unlike other high-profile celebrities, he likely faces a lack of support and financial challenges from the authorities.

Apart from being an incredible MMA fighter, Khabib is the founder of Eagles MMA and the driving force behind Eagle Fighting Championships. However, the EFC has been inactive in 2024 so far, with no events organized. A potential move to the UAE, with its tax-favorable policies, might provide Nurmagomedov with financial shelter and a way to overcome his alleged legal trouble in Russia.
