Dev Kapil Former Indian cricket player Ramlal Nikhanj, popularly known as Kapil Dev, was born on January 6, 1959. The Indian cricket team that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup was led by him. He was selected as the 2002 Indian Cricketer of the Century by Wisden. The all-time great all-rounder also spent ten months, from October 1999 to August 2000, coaching India’s national cricket squad. 

When Kapil’s family saw how much he loved the game, they pushed him to pursue it more seriously. When Kapil began playing for the DAV school, he was barely 14 years old. The right-arm medium-pace bowler began receiving coaching in cricket from Desh Prem Azad. Kapil Dev received an invitation to a live-in coaching camp in Bombay when he was fifteen years old. Former India test cricket player Hemu Adhikari oversaw the program. At the age of seventeen, he made his first-class debut against Punjab in November 1975. With six wickets for just 39 runs, he had a fantastic effort. After that, there was no turning back because this was only the beginning of an incredible career. 

With his deadly delivery in his subsequent games, Kapil Dev decimated the opposition (Jammu & Kashmir, Bengal, and Services). Kapil’s greatest strength was his free-striking outswinger. “God gave me the outswinger, I had to develop the rest,” he famously said after going on to produce the Inswinging Yorker. The right-handed hitter began honing his bottom middle-order batting abilities in the middle of his career. In the 1983 World Cup, he demonstrated his value as a batsman against Zimbabwe by scoring 175 runs off of just 138 balls. For India, this inning changed the course of the tournament. He was an all-around player in the same category as Hadlee, Botham, and Imran Khan thanks to his more than 5000 runs and 400 wickets in Test matches. 

He might not have been the best captain, but he was far more aggressive than the Indian commanders that came before him. 

Throughout his remarkable Test and ODI career, Kapil set numerous records and received numerous honors. He surpassed Sir Richard Hadlee’s record to become the highest Test wicket-taker in history at the beginning of 1994. Courtney Walsh broke his record in 1999. The all-arounder’s double of 4,000 Test runs and 400 Test wickets has only been attained by him. He became the youngest test cricket player to take 300 wickets at the age of 27. With 184 innings pitched without being hit by a pitch during his career, he now retains the record. 

In 1988, Kapil surpassed the formidable West Indian Joel Garner to become the all-time leader in ODI wicket-taking. His 253 wickets during his ODI career stood as a record until Wasim Akram beat it in 1994.
