New Zealand Ends 36-Year Drought with Test Win in India under Latham’s Leadership
New Zealand achieved a historic Test match victory in India, breaking a 36-year winless streak. Under the leadership of Tom Latham, the New Zealand secured a memorable win in Bangalore, a feat made even more impressive by the absence of their regular captain, Kane Williamson.
Williamson, sidelined by a groin strain, sustained the injury during New Zealand’s recent Test series against Sri Lanka. His absence in the match did not deter the BLACKCAPS, who delivered a performance for the ages, marking New Zealand’s first Test win on Indian soil since 1988.
As Williamson continues his rehabilitation, New Zealand head coach Gary Stead provided an update on his fitness ahead of the second Test match against India, which begins Thursday in Pune.
“Kane is progressing well, but he’s not yet 100% fit,” Stead explained. “We are hopeful for further improvement in the coming days, with the aim of having him available for the third Test. In the meantime, we will take a cautious approach to ensure his full recovery.”
Williamson will remain in New Zealand as he works towards full fitness, while New Zealand look to build on their momentum from the historic Bangalore victory.
Latham, who has previously captained New Zealand, led the side admirably, with the win being a testament to the team’s depth and resilience in the face of challenges. New Zealand will now focus on maintaining their form as they head into the second Test in Pune, aiming for back-to-back victories inthe series.
