Jos Buttler’s Struggles Continue as England Falls to West Indies in ODI Opener
In a disappointing start to their ODI series against the West Indies, England faced a four-wicket defeat, marred by Jos Buttler’s ongoing poor form.
Buttler, the England skipper, failed to reach double figures once again, succumbing tamely to spinner Gudakesh Motie’s delivery, scoring only 3 runs in 13 balls.
Buttler’s outing, lasting just 13 deliveries, highlighted his current struggles, echoing his lackluster performance in the recent World Cup campaign.
During the World Cup, Buttler failed to notch a single half-century, averaging just 15.33 in nine group-stage matches, raising concerns about his form and impact as a key player.
The skipper’s dismissal against the West Indies occurred when he attempted a reverse sweep against Motie, resulting in a gloved ball to slip, eventually caught by Alick Athanaze on the second attempt after knocking it into the air.
In a post-match interview, Buttler expressed his frustration, acknowledging the need to work hard and trust that his form would return.
“You always want to play well and it’s been a little while since I’ve played well. I just need to work hard and trust that it will come back,” Buttler said.
Despite Buttler’s struggles, England’s openers Phil Salt and Will Jacks provided a strong start, racing to 76-0 by the ninth over. However, West Indies found their way back in as they kept chipping wickets at regular intervals.
Buttler praised their batting effort, emphasizing the fantastic tone set by Salt and Jacks. However, the West Indies managed to peg England back in the middle phase, limiting them to a total of 325.
Shai Hope’s stunning century ultimately secured victory for the West Indies, chasing down the target with seven balls to spare. Buttler acknowledged the outstanding performance of Hope and his teammates, giving credit for their fantastic hitting in the latter stages of the game.
Despite the defeat, Buttler remained positive about England’s overall performance. He highlighted the contributions of leg-spin bowler Rehan Ahmed, who finished as the pick of the attack with figures of 2-40.

Ahmed crucially took important wickets, including trapping Athanaze lbw and dismissing Sherfane Rutherford caught at deep midwicket. However, Sam Curran bowled without control and was rightly targetted by West Indies batters.
Jos Buttler’s struggles continued to cast a shadow over England’s performance, there were positive aspects to be taken from the game. The team’s openers set a strong tone, and bowlers like Rehan Ahmed showcased their skills.
As England looks ahead in the series, Buttler’s recovery and the team’s collective improvement will be key to bouncing back from this initial setback.
