Jon Jones Eyes Return After Injury, Miocic Clash Looms Large
Former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones appears on track for a return to the Octagon after posting a social media update on Wednesday detailing his first training session since suffering a pectoral injury last November.
The setback forced Jones to withdraw from a scheduled heavyweight title defense against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295. However, Jones’ message suggests the highly anticipated bout remains a possibility.
“First day back in the gym since my injury, felt amazing,” Jones wrote. “And so it began.”
Jones, 36, captured the vacant UFC heavyweight title in his last outing at UFC 285 with a dominant win over Ciryl Gane. However, inactivity has become a recurring theme in recent years. Since 2020, Jones has only managed two fights, defeating Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 before the Gane victory.
Legal issues and a past contract dispute with the UFC have all played a role in limiting Jones’ fighting opportunities. Despite this, his in-cage record remains formidable.
Across 29 professional bouts, Jones boasts an undefeated record, with his only blemishes being a 2009 disqualification loss and a no-contest due to a failed drug test.
Jones’ return will be a welcome sight for UFC fans eager to see him back in action, particularly with the potential heavyweight title fight against Miocic hanging in the balance. This matchup promises fireworks, pitting two of the most decorated champions in UFC history against each other.
