Money In the Bank 2024 saw yet another amazing PLE. However, one thing that was quite surprising was John Cena coming out to make a shocking announcement. Cena announced that he is retiring from WWE and in 2025 he will go on a retirement tour, competing at Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania. During his farewell tour, CM Punk has already made it clear that he wants to make sure he and Cena face off at least one more time.
Cena and Punk reunited backstage
During the MITB post-show press conference, Punk made this announcement and also revealed that he texted Cena to tell him not to leave before saying hi and despite the reply indicating otherwise, Cena stuck around and their reunion was caught on camera. What Punk and Cena were talking about is unclear, but they clearly seemed happy to see each other.
Punk was seen pointing towards his arm and then pretending to lift a weight, which suggests they are talking about Punk’s triceps injury and his recovery. The two men shake hands and hug as seen in the clip. It’s somewhat fitting that the two met at Money in the Bank all these years later, as it was at the same event in 2011 where Punk and Cena had what many fans consider their greatest match of all time, culminating in one of the most memorable moments in WWE history.
Both of them had an iconic match at MITB
During that time, going to his hometown of Chicago, the “Cookie Master” vowed to defeat Cena for the WWE title and leave the company with it. His contract ended the same night with the PLE. Vince McMahon asked Cena to get the job done and threatened to fire him if he failed to defeat Punk. Despite the hype generated by the build-up to that match and Punk walking out of WWE with the title, this was where Cena was brought back with another title and everything was somewhat undermined by Punk not being absent for long.
It is still unclear if CM Punk has been given the green light to get back in the ring, but he has been once again spoiling the fun for Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre. “The Scottish Warrior” isn’t a problem right now as he has been suspended for attacking Adam Pearce at Money in the Bank. However, Rollins clearly hasn’t moved on from his hatred for the Chicago Native, putting him in a hole when he got involved in his title match at MITB.
