British author JK Rowling is seemingly taking a long social media break after the controversy over Algerian boxer Imane Khelif went viral and Rowling received a lot of backlash from the netizens. The Harry Potter novel author was one of those people who slammed the boxer for being transgender.
The British Author attacked Khelif through her tweets
While taking a shot at Khelif, Rowling mentioned that the Algerian boxer is being protected by the ‘misogynist sporting establishments.’ Later known figures like Elon Musk and Logan Paul also came into the picture and attacked Imane Khelif, accusing her of violating the rules of the sport. The criticism went down when Khelif presented the documents that supported the fact she was born a woman. She then filed a lawsuit against JK Rowling.
Soon after the legal proceedings came to light, Rowling stopped posting on social media. As per the latest update on her X account, JK Rowling has deleted 27 tweets and her account has been inactive for about 13 days. Rowling is known for her anti-trans stance. She had previously been involved in a major controversy where her comments were opposed by Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.
On August 7, Rowling posted, “For the record, bombarding me with pictures of athletic women to teach me that women don’t look like Barbie is like spamming me with pictures of differently shaped potatoes to prove that stones are edible. I can still see the difference and you look frankly bonkers.”
Khelif has filed a lawsuit against Rowling
The whole controversy began when Imane Khelif faced Italy’s Angela Carini at the Paris Olympics 2024. Just seconds after the match began, Carini withdrew from the fight, accusing Khelif of punching harder than the female athlete. This led to people accusing Imane of being transgender. In 2023, Khelif failed a gender test conducted by the IBA, so this added fuel to the fire. However, it was later revealed that Khelif suffers from a rare physical condition called disorders of sex development. This condition leads to the imbalance in hormones, genes and reproductive organs of a woman, as they have both X and Y chromosomes in their body.
