Australia’s left-arm spinner, Jess Jonassen is not part of Australia’s squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of Bangladesh. The left-arm spinner has been excluded from the squad, though, the chief selectors emphasized that she remains in the scheme of things for future assignments.
Jonassen has been a regular side member since making her debut in 2012. However, over the past couple of years, she has fallen behind the pecking order, considering the emergence of players like Gardner, Georgia Wareham, and Alana King.
“I think over the last couple of years, particularly over the last 12 months, JJ’s role has not been as strong in the team. That’s probably more to do with players like Ash Gardner having her game develop…and also players like Georgia Wareham with her skill set. Alana Kings’ form as well over the last 12 to 18 months has been really strong,” Flegler was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo.
Besides the three names mentioned above, the selectors have also given the nod to Ash Gardner, who had earlier missed out on the ODI leg of the West Indies tour. Having said that, the selectors have stated that the door remains open for all the players to make a comeback anytime into the squad.
“We’ve seen over the past few World Cups and Comm Games, we’ve had issues with injuries that come up at the last minute,” Flegler said. “So if you’re not in the squad right now, you’ve just got to keep fighting and be ready if that opportunity does arise.”
Meanwhile, Tayla Vlaeminck will be making her comeback from a long two-year injury-forced break. She has been out of the side for a long period of time due to a dislocated shoulder and a stress fracture.
“I think I lost the ability to speak for a moment there. It’s something I’ve been pushing towards and it’s given me motivation over the last couple of years. For it to actually happen, it felt a little bit surreal, to be honest,” Vlaeminck said.
Notably, this is the first time when the Australian team will be going to Bangladesh to play a bilateral series. The two teams will lock horns with each other in three T20Is and as many ODIs.
The Aussies went to Bangladesh in 2014 during the T20 World Cup, in which they emerged victorious.
