Liverpool’s impressive start to the Premier League season under Arne Slot has put them in a commanding position, five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table.
With nine wins from their first 11 games, Slot has made the best start of any manager in Premier League history, sparking discussions of a potential historic title win in his first season.
However, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that to secure the title, Liverpool must make a significant move in the January transfer window. Carragher has urged the club to reignite their pursuit of Martin Zubimendi, the Real Sociedad midfielder who turned down a move to Anfield in the summer.
Zubimendi, who has a release clause of £51 million, was initially tempted by Liverpool’s offer but chose to stay with Real Sociedad. Despite this, Liverpool’s decision to deploy Ryan Gravenberch as a number six has been a masterstroke, but Carragher argues that another midfielder is still needed to bolster the squad.
Carragher emphasized the importance of capitalizing on Liverpool’s current position, stating,
“There’s a long way to go, I get that, but we know Liverpool don’t do silly things in the transfer market but if there is something there right now. Do it. Zubimendi is the player he wanted, they ended up putting Gravenberch there who has been fantastic, but if he is the player you want – go and do it – you might never be in this position.”
Liverpool’s measured approach in the transfer market has been a hallmark of their success, but Carragher believes that this is a unique opportunity that should not be missed. He added,
“You might be here three years but City are City and they are five points ahead of you at Christmas. Just make it count.”
While Liverpool remains interested in Zubimendi, it remains to be seen if the player’s stance has changed since the summer. The January transfer window will be a crucial period for Liverpool as they aim to solidify their title challenge and potentially secure a historic Premier League win under Slot’s leadership.
Carragher’s call to action highlights the high stakes and the need for strategic moves to ensure Liverpool’s success. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Liverpool’s transfer decisions and their pursuit of key players like Zubimendi.
