Jaime Munguia displayed an impressive performance against John Ryder. Now he is 43-0 with 34 knockouts under the guidance of Freddy Roach, establishing himself as a viable option for a showdown against Saul Alvarez in May. Ryder has lost another shot at defeating a high-level opponent. Although “The Gorilla” has good wins on his resume, it is a huge blow and he will struggle to find himself in big fights after another consecutive defeat.
The British fighter suffered second TKO defeat of his career
Munguia demonstrated his commanding ability with a dominant performance against the British boxer at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. In the exciting 12-round super middleweight bout, Munguia dropped Ryder four times, ultimately scoring a ninth-round knockout victory. Ryder, known for his tenacity, suffered only the second TKO in his 13-year professional career. The decisive knockdowns occurred in the second, fourth and twice in the ninth round. Referee Wes Melton wisely decided to end the bout at 1:25 of the ninth round after Ryder’s corner threw in the towel.
Jaime is now a strong contender for these titles
This impressive victory positions the Mexican as a strong contender for Saul Alvarez’s IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO 168-pound titles on May 4. The fight marked Ryder’s first close-distance loss since 2015, further highlighting Munguia’s exceptional performance in the super middleweight match. Ryder suffered his first inside-the-distance defeat since May 2015, when Nick Blackwell stopped him in the seventh round at London’s O2 Arena. In that match, Ryder was leading before referee Howard Foster intervened late in the seventh round, although Ryder managed to stay on his feet.
Munguia wants an All-Mexican showdown
After defeating Ryder in a more dominant fashion, Munguia made it clear that he wanted an All-Mexican showdown with Alvarez. Canelo has not yet announced his next fight, which will likely take place in May. The biggest issue that might prevent a bout between the two men is that Alvarez is signed with PBC and will likely fight one of the promotion’s fighters in his deal. Munguia is signed to Golden Boy Promotions, which Canelo was signed with for much of his career. Furthermore, Canelo’s poor relationship with Oscar De La Hoya will not help make the fight a success.
