Bangladesh’s Leading Women’s Pace Bowler Jahanara Alam Takes Indefinite Break from Cricket Due to Mental Health Issues
The Bangladesh Cricket Board announced on Monday that Jahanara Alam, the country’s top women’s pace bowler, has decided to take a break from cricket for an indefinite period due to mental health concerns. This decision came after Alam submitted a letter expressing that she was not mentally prepared to continue playing and requested a two-month break.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, BCB women’s wing in-charge Habibul Bashar stated, “She even said that if necessary, she should not be kept in the contract. We need to respect that because if someone feels that she is not mentally ready and wants to take a break for some days, we need to accept that. There is no specific time frame for which she is out. Whenever she feels well, she will let us know.”
Alam’s Career and Recent Return
Jahanara Alam has represented Bangladesh in 52 ODIs and 83 T20Is throughout her career. After a year-long absence, she made a comeback to the national team in July 2024. Although she was included in the T20 World Cup squad, she did not feature in any of the matches. Alam recently participated in Bangladesh’s home series against Ireland, playing in the T20Is and being benched for the ODIs.
Upcoming West Indies Tour and Squad Announcement
The BCB unveiled the women’s team squad for the upcoming tour of West Indies, marking Bangladesh’s first visit to the region for a series of three ODIs and three T20Is at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts. The team, led by Nigar Sultana, is set to arrive in St Kitts on January 14. The ODIs are scheduled for January 19, 21, and 24, with the T20Is following on January 27, 29, and 31.
This series holds significant importance as both teams aim to secure crucial ICC Women’s Championship points for direct qualification to the 50-over World Cup in India later in the year. Bangladesh must win the series to secure their place in the tournament.
