UFC lightweight fighter Michael Chandler has revealed that he has been offered an undisputed title fight against Islam Makhachev at UFC 308 in October this year, which will take place in Abu Dhabi. “Iron” is currently ranked sixth in the division. However, he has been out of action since 2022. Chandler’s last fight ended with a third-round rear-naked submission defeat to Dustin Poirier at UFC 281. He was set to make his return to the Octagon at UFC 303 with a welterweight bout against Conor McGregor, but the headliner got canceled due to the Irishman injuring his pinky toe.
Chandler offered a title fight
Michael Chandler still wants to face McGregor for his return fight in the Octagon, but he has recently claimed that he has received an offer to fight Makhachev for the lightweight championship at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi. Chandler stated that he has been offered Makhachev in October, but if McGregor’s pinky toe is ready by September he is ready to do the sphere.
On his X account, Chandler wrote, “I’ve been after you for 8 years…good, old-fashioned, passionate Dagestani Sambo beats every day of the week.”
Makhachev is not interested in Chandler
In his previous win, Makhachev scored a fifth-round submission victory over Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 302 in May. Michael Chandler has a 2-3 record in the UFC, so it is unclear why he would get a title shot. Aside from the callout, the Dagestani doesn’t seem very interested in fighting Chandler.
He responded, “You are unreliable dude, one tweet from your master and you’ll run away. Champ needs a real opponent.”
The champion also turned down Poirier
Makhachev’s next opponent, Arman Tsarukyan, has been suspended for nine months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission due to the brawl. However, if Tsarukyan participates in an anti-bullying public service announcement, the suspension will be reduced to six months, making him eligible to fight as of October 12.
UFC 308 is just two weeks ahead of when Tsarukyan’s suspension ends, so there is no reason why he won’t be able to make it to the bout against Makhachev. The Russian fighter also turned down Dustin Poirier, responding to the callout by simply saying “No Thanks.” The promotion is yet to announce an opponent for Makhachev for UFC 308.
