Is Virgil van Dijk In Trouble For His Reaction To Red Card?
In the first half of Sunday’s 2-1 victory for Liverpool at St. James’ Park, the Netherlands’ centre-back was dismissed for a tackle on Alexander Isak. The VAR upheld referee John Brooks’ on-field decision to remove the Liverpool captain for fouling Alexander Isak on the edge of the box.
The defender took a while to leave the field of play and then confronted Craig Pawson, the fourth official, delaying the restart. After being dismissed in the 29th minute, Van Dijk allegedly “acted improperly and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official.”
The international player from the Netherlands has till Friday to respond to the accusation.
Van Dijk won’t play for Liverpool against Aston Villa at home on Sunday in the Premier League. But if his suspension is prolonged, he could not go to Wolves on Saturday, September 16.
Ref Watch on Van Dijk incident
Dermot Gallagher, a former Premier League official:
“I believe that to be a foul. Has he been presented with a clear opportunity to score? Does he now have the ball? Without a doubt, that is true. Will he have an open shot at goal? He’ll move towards the direction of the goal once he has the ball. He’s outside the penalty area, right? Yes, the referee must dismiss him. There is no question that he gets the ball, but he gets the man first. I don’t think anyone would argue that it was a foul.”
