IPL Retention Rules 2025: IPL franchises allowed to have six retentions and match fees were introduced in IPL history
The Indian Governing Council announced the ‘Player Regulations” for the IPL 2025-2027 cycle on Saturday. In what is said to be a masterstroke, the IPL has announced six retentions for all ten franchises ahead of the mega auction.
As per the press release shared by the Governing Council, each franchise can retain a maximum of six players through a combination of retentions and Right To Match.
“It is at the discretion of the IPL franchise to choose their combination for retentions and RTMs,” the release stated.
The franchise can opt for a maximum of five capped players. All five can be Indian or international cricketers. Besides, the franchises can opt for a maximum of two uncapped players.
“The six retentions/RTMs can have a maximum of five capped players (Indian and overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped [Indians] players.” The release added.

- 1st Retention: 18 crore
- 2nd Retention: 14 crore
- 3rd Retention: 11 crore
- 4th Retention: 18 crore
- 5th Retention: 14 crore
Meanwhile, the retention amount for the uncapped players stays at INR 4 crore.
The total purse for the IPL 2024 mega auction has been increased to INR 120 crore. If a franchise decides to use all their five retentions and also acquire an uncapped player, they would then be spending as much as INR 79 crore and be left with only 45 crores at the auction.
Match fee introduced in the history of India Premier League:
In addition to the contracted amount received by the player from the franchise, each playing member will get a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per match.
“A match fee has been introduced for the first time in the history of IPL. Each Playing member (Including the Impact Player) will get a match fee of INR 7.5 Lakhs per match. This will be in addition to his contracted amount.” IPL governing council mentioned in its release.
Despite facing the criticism surrounding the impact player rule, the IPL governing council decided to continue the rule for the 2025-2027 cycle.
