In a big development, Australian cricketer Pat Cummins has been appointed as the captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming IPL 2024 season. He will be taking over from Aiden Markram, who led the team last season.
Pat Cummins hasn’t led any side in the Indian Premier League thus far or in any other franchise T20 cricket tournament. However, he boasts of a successful portfolio as an Australian captain in international cricket.
Cummins led Australia to win the World Test Championship and the 2023 World Cup in India. In both the tournaments, Australia beat India to lift the trophy. The Australian fast bowler has been enjoying a great time on the cricket field as a leader.
He will soon be leading the Australian team in the upcoming T20 World Cup and the Sunrisers Hyderabad would be hoping that his leadership skills would help them grab their second IPL trophy.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have an array of world-class overseas talents in their set-up for this year’s edition. By naming Cummins as the skipper, SRH now can play both Hasaranga and Travis Head. With Cummins as the permanent choice, SRH could opt between Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen to do the finishing job.
Besides these, they have three more overseas world-class talents Fazalhaq Farooqi, Marco Jansen and Glenn Phillips to opt for when the need arises.
SRH didn’t have great outings in the last few seasons. They have been changing and chopping their leaders and coaches but haven’t got the desired result. In the 2022 season, Kane Williamson led the side before he was released ahead of the 2023 edition.
Cummuns To Replace Markram as Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain
Aiden Markram was given the responsibility last year but he too couldn’t do anything substantial. With the bat, Markram couldn’t inspire any confidence either, scoring 248 runs at a strike rate of close to 130.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have put their bet on Pat Cummins this year and it will be interesting to see the team fares well this season. Besides, they have also changed their head coach with Daniel Vettori leading the charge.
In addition to that, New Zealand’s former fast bowling all-rounder, James Franklin has replaced Dale Steyn as their new bowling coach. The Orange Army will begin their campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens stadium on 23rd March, followed by the clash against Mumbai Indians in Hyderabad on 27th March 2024.
