The rising star of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Ruturaj Gaikwad, is ready to take on the captaincy of the team for the forthcoming IPL 2024 season. In an open discussion, Gaikwad disclosed that the great MS Dhoni himself gave him the hint about becoming captain.
Thinking back to his chat with Dhoni during the previous season, Gaikwad said that Mahi bhai had already made hints about becoming captain at some point, so it shouldn’t have surprised him.
Gaikwad said to BCCI.TV, “You know, Mahi bhai made some allusions regarding captaincy even last year. All he did was imply to ‘be ready’ You shouldn’t be surprised by it.”
He revealed, “Gaikwad further elaborated on how Dhoni subtly prepared him for the leadership role, stating, “When we came into the camp, he made me involved in some of the practice match simulations – back of the mind it was there, a week ago, he told me I have decided this.”
Ruturaj Gaikwad on IPL 2024 captaincy:
Even prior to the formal announcement, it was clear that Dhoni supported Gaikwad in his new role. Dhoni’s mysterious Facebook post from March 4th raised rumours regarding Gaikwad’s captaincy. It read, “Excited for the new season and new role. Pay attention,”.
Recalling the incident, Gaikwad revealed how fans speculated about Dhoni’s potential as the next captain after he posted on social media about his new position. In response, Gaikwad said there might be another reason.
He said, “I recall him sharing on social media about his new position. I was the centre of attention as everyone asked if I would be the next captain. ‘Maybe he means something else,’ to which I replied in response.”
Despite the weight of the new duty, Gaikwad maintains his composure and thanks Dhoni for his support.
He continued, “I think he’s a terrific backbone to still be playing. I have Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) and Ajju (Ajinkya Rahane) bhai, so there are plenty of options to consider. I don’t believe anything needs to change. Give players the freedom they desire, and I believe everything will work out.”
Dhoni’s ultimate decision:
After being appointed, Gaikwad and his former teammate Faf du Plessis—who is currently captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)—shared a touching moment.
“I recently met Faf at the meeting, and I said, ‘Who would have thought that a few years later, you would be leading and playing for RCB?’ At the toss, you and I will be sharing the stage. A great deal to anticipate. It is, in my opinion, one of the most thrilling opening-day games to anticipate,” he remarked.
Gaikwad joined CSK in 2019 and has since earned his stripes, which led to his selection as captain. Gaikwad thanked MS Dhoni for the leadership role and reflected on his journey, emphasizing the value of joining a prestigious team and winning his trust.
“I’m feeling fantastic. There are two causes. First and foremost, I will be a part of an incredible franchise from the beginning of my IPL career. Second, it says a lot that MS Dhoni can be trusted in a leadership capacity. I am eager to take on the challenge that lies ahead,” he remarked.
Gaikwad said, “I have enjoyed the way this specific franchise has operated over the years, and I believe I have discovered the true secret to its success. What kind of experiences does Mahi Bhai, the management, or the support staff have in this franchise? I wouldn’t want to change a single thing about it.”
