ODI World Cup 2023 Champions grab huge deal in the IPL 2024 auction Register. Seven of Australia’s ODI World Cup winning team, Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood, Steven Smith, Josh Inglis and Sean Abbott are among the 25 players who have entered the IPL 2024 player auction with a base price of INR 2 crores. The auction is slated to be held on December 19 in Dubai. Notably it will be the first time that an IPL auction will be held outside India.
Other major gainers in the IPL 2024 Auction register is batting all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, who scored 578 runs at a strike rate of 106 and took five wickets at the World Cup. After his spectacular run in the ODI World Cup 2023 Ravindra has listed his base price at INR 50 lakhs (USD 60,000 approximately). Other significant players in the highest base price are fast bowler, Gerald Coetzee who was Proteas’ highest wicket-taker at the marquee event. Meanwhile, England’s batter Harry Brook, who was released by Sunrisers Hyderabad, along with Harshal Patel, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav and Kedar Jadhav have been listed in the highest base price of 2 crores.
Ten Franchises have a total of 77 slots to fill in the IPL 2024 Auction register
A total of ten franchisees will enter the IPL 2024 auction & will have 77 slots to fill. Out of these 77 slots, 30 seats can be overseas players. Considering the skillset & performances of the players in the ODI World Cup 2023 there are chances that Starc, Head and Ravindra can result in fierce bidding war among the franchisees. If Starc manages to grab a deal then he will return to IPL after eight years. He had last played in the 2015 season of IPL for RCB. He entered the 2018 auction & was bought at a base price of 9.4 crores by KKR but he missed that season due to an injury. This time Starc will be up in the radar of franchisees & we can witness a fierce bidding war for acquiring the services of Starc. He will utilize the IPL 2024 as the preparation for the t20 World cup 2024 in June.
Travis Head who received the ‘Player of the Match’ in the semi final & final of 2023 ODI World Cup. He hasn’t played the IPL since 2017 when he was a part of RCB squad & played ten matches across two seasons scoring 205 runs at a strike rate of 138.51.
BCCI shared a list of 1166 Players registered for IPL 2024 Auction
BCCI shared a list of 1166 players with the franchisees who had registered for the IPL 2024 auction. But the final pool will be much smaller than the actual list as the franchisees will submit the names of players they are interested in. The long list includes 45 players from Associate nations, 909 uncapped players of which 812 are Indian, and 18 capped Indian players.
The likes of Harshal Patel, Harry Brook, Shardul Thakur, Wanindu Hasaranga along with uncapped player Shahrukh khan can attract huge interest of the franchisees. Both Hasaranga & Harshal were bought for the base price of 10.75 crores. However, they were released by RCB due to their weak performance at M Chinnaswamy stadium, the franchise’s home base.
Players released by franchisees ahead of IPL 2024 auction
Harry Brook was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 13.25 crores which made him the most expensive overseas players buy at a mini auction by the franchise. Brook failed to make an impact during IPL 2023 which forced Sunrisers to rethink about their investment. Thakur, too, was bought for 10.75 Crores in a trade before the 2023 auction from Delhi Capitals. However, Thakur managed seven wickets in 10 matches at an economy of nearly 11 and an average of 31.42. Shardul thakur failed to make an impact with the willow as well scoring 113 runs in 10 innings. It was his poor performance that led the franchise to re-think about his retention & ultimately released him from the team.
Coming to Shahrukh Khan who plays for Tamil Nadu made his appearance in IPL in 2021 edition when Punjab based franchise bought him for 5.25 crores. Just a year later he was released ahead of the mega auction but was purchased for 9 crores by the same franchise. However, just one Player of the Match award & an average performance proved disappointing for the franchise who finally released him. Shahrukh has put his base price at 40 lakhs and would be keen to see his hometown franchise, Chennai Super Kings, interested in bagging him.
