The Men in Blue managed to win gold at the marquee event final even after the summit clash of Asian games against Afghanistan was called off due to rains in Hangzhou. While fans were upset with the fixture getting called off due to rain, the events turned in India’s favor as they won Gold due to their superior ranking in the Asian Games points table.
Rain played a spoilsport in the Asian Games 2023 Final clash
The fans were upset as the much-anticipated final between India & Afghanistan ended with No result. The match resumed at slated time with India winning the toss & opting to bowl first in the overcast conditions. However, as the fixture progressed rain clouds gathered raising doubt over the completion of the fixture.
Afghanistan’s Innings
Batting first, Afghanistan managed to post a total of 112 runs for a loss of 5 wickets in 18.2 overs. Shahidullah Kamal played a crucial knock of 49 runs off 43 balls guiding Afghanistan’s innings with three fours & two sixes. But rain played a spoilsport resulting in stoppage of play & leaving Afghanistan’s innings unfinished.
The Indian bowlers led by Arshdeep Singh & Shivam Dube displayed their skill in these challenging conditions. Arshdeep scalped one wicket while Shiva and Dube returned with a wicket for just four runs. Despite a good show with the ball rain resulted in the game ending in a No result.
Hopes of Resumption of Play marred due to rains
As rain continued the umpires had no choice but to declare the match as ‘No result’ due to unplayable conditions. The fixture getting called off due to rains disappointed fans of both teams who were hoping for a thrilling contest between two top teams of the Asian Games 2023.
However, the rain didn’t ruin India’s chances of winning gold as they were declared the winner of the Asian Games 2023 Men’s T20I due to a higher ranking in the tournament. This glorious triumph added one more accolade to India’s rich & fascinating cricketing history.
