Early Career
Sandeep began his career as a batsman but, on the advice of his coach, Kamaljeet Singh, changed to become a swing bowler during his school days. The lad from Patiala was a fast-medium bowler in the making, a true talent. Recognized for his precision and remarkable capacity to generate traditional swingers, Sandeep was selected for the Indian team for the 2010 Under-19 World Cup, which took place in New Zealand. At the time, he was only sixteen. Sandeep Sharma’s breakthrough moment came at the 2012 U19 World Cup in Australia, where the Indian junior side won the championship under Unmukt Chand’s leadership, even though many took notice of the young bowler throughout that competition.
Sandeep was the joint top wicket-taker for India in the U19 World Cup campaign with 12 wickets, and he took four of those wickets in the final against the hosts, Australia; thus, his selection by KXIP in the auction ahead of the 2013 IPL was not surprising. Sandeep was in scorching form during the 2012–2013 Ranji season, claiming 42 wickets from 9 games at an astounding average of 19.41. Sandeep played in just four games for KXIP during his rookie campaign, but he still managed to pick up eight wickets. That was the fewest wickets he had taken in any IPL season. Sandeep has never finished an IPL season without claiming a minimum of 12 wickets. Over his tenure with KXIP from 2013 to 2017, he amassed 71 wickets from 56 matches, making him a regular bowler. Franchises were only allowed to hold onto three players before the 2018 IPL super auction.
After going unsold in the 2023 IPL auction, Sandeep Sharma was acquired by the Rajasthan Royals in March 2023 to replace the injured Prasidh Krishna in the 2023 IPL.
