Indian cricket team has played all World Cup tournaments since 1975. They have reached semi-finals four times and won it two times. As the players have changed throughout the years so have changed the jersey of Indian cricket team.
From 1975 to 1987, in four World Cups, Indian team played in all whites but since 1992, we witnessed a new flair of world cup with team having their own tailor made jerseys for the ultimate event.
Today, we will take a look at the evolution of Indian cricket team jersey:
1992 World Cup
In 1992 World Cup, almost all teams had a similiar patterned jersey with only changed colours. It looked like creativity hadn’t touched the attire section of the World Cup. However, this being the first ever coloured jersey, we still feel the aesthetic attraction for the vintage jersey of Indian cricket team.
1996 World Cup
The jersey in 1996 cricket World Cup was loosened light blue with a wide yellow strip on chest. Not the most beautiful one but a historical one for sure. The 1996 World Cup was controversial for many reasons. First of all, what Indian team supporters did during the semifinals was truly unacceptable, they had to call army to usher through the Indian and Sri Lankan team.
1999 World Cup
Imagine going back to 1999 World Cup, probably the worst from Indian perspective because they lost to Zimbabwe in that World Cup. The Indian team jersey in 1999 World Cup has light blue shade with upright collar. It was sponsored by Wills.
2003 World Cup
In the first Cricket World Cup of 21st century, India reached to the finals. First time, the tricolours had come on to chest and the country name on it. Black border and strech around and inside shoulders gave this jersey an unique look. It was best World Cup in Sachin Tendulkar’s career in terms of his dominance with bat.
2007 World Cup
By the time of 2007 World Cup, the Indian jersey had started to adopt a finer look. Featuring a moving colour of light blue featuring tricolours on right shoulder gave it a definite look. This was the first World Cup where Indian team had started to put some belief in its youngsters.
2011 World Cup
2011 Cricket World Cup was memorable for India so was the jersey Indian team wore. After wait of 28 years, from winning the World Cup in all whites to winning it in iconic blue jersey was just sublime. If you ask fans, they will this was the best Indian team jersey.
The jersey was also special because was saw God of cricket -Sachin Tendulkar- last time in a World Cup jersey for India. This jersey was a mixture of dark and light blue, giving it an ocean like depiction. The shades of tricolours beneath both shoulders made it look absolutely beautiful.
2015 World Cup
From flair jersey to a shiny one, in 2015 World Cup, Indian team wore an upgraded version of 2011 World Cup jersey. The color was same but there were no tricolours on the jersey. The BCCI logo on left chest had gone bigger and there lines going downward pattern with contrasting blue colours.
2019 World Cup
Indian team jersey in 2019 World Cup was mixture of vintage and modern blend. Dark Blue in front and light blue in backside, with orange collars, the jersey looked fantastic. Indian team wore special jersey against England which was completely soaked in navy blue with orange shoulders.
These were the jersey Indian cricket team wore throughout the World Cup years. All of them were specially designed but not until 2015, special attention was given to the jersey that the team had to wear.
