India Youngsters Reach New Highs in ICC Player Rankings after Ranchi Heroics
A trio of young Indian batters have been rewarded for their stellar performances in the recently concluded fourth Test against England, rising to new career-best positions in the latest ICC Men’s Player Rankings released on Wednesday.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Dhruv Jurel, who all played crucial roles in India’s series-clinching five-wicket victory at Ranchi, saw their rankings jump significantly after contributing vital half-centuries during the match.
Jaiswal, who played a key knock of 88 in the second innings, climbed three positions to 12th, while Gill, who scored 70 in the first innings, moved up four spots to 31st.
Jurel, who impressed with his 57 in the second innings, made the biggest leap, rising a staggering 31 places to reach a career-high 69th position.
These impressive individual performances were not the only stories to emerge from the updated rankings. New Zealand’s veteran batsman, Kane Williamson, maintained his dominant position at the top of the Test batting rankings, while England’s Joe Root climbed to third place after scoring his 31st Test century in Ranchi.
England opener Zak Crawley also enjoyed a rise in the rankings, jumping 10 spots to 17th on the back of his scores of 42 and 60 against India.
His teammate, Joe Root, had further reason to celebrate, as he moved up three places to fourth in the Test all-rounders rankings, though Ravindra Jadeja remains firmly at the top of that category.
Despite missing the fourth Test due to rest, India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah retained his top spot in the Test bowler rankings. His teammate, Kuldeep Yadav, made significant progress, jumping 10 positions to a career-high equal 32nd place after his four-wicket haul in the second innings against England.
The ICC Men’s Player Rankings also saw slight adjustments in the T20I and ODI categories. Australia’s recent 3-0 series whitewash over New Zealand in the T20I format saw skipper Mitch Marsh rise two places to 15th in the batting rankings and a significant 21 spots to 13th in the all-rounders rankings for his Player of the Series performance.
Additionally, teammates Travis Head (up 18 to 19th) and Tim David (up six to 22nd) made notable gains in the batting rankings.
Australia’s resurgence in T20Is was further reflected in their bowling attack, with seamer Josh Hazlewood re-entering the top 10 at equal seventh place after a six-position jump. New Zealand’s Lockie Ferguson also made strides in the category, climbing 20 spots to 29th after taking five wickets in the series.
The latest ODI rankings saw minimal movement, with the exception of Namibia’s duo Bernard Scholtz and Gerhard Erasmus, who rose in the rankings following their contributions at the start of the new ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 cycle.
Scholtz moved up six places to 11th among ODI bowlers, while skipper Erasmus climbed eight spots to a joint-sixth position in the all-rounders category.
