Women’s Bangladesh Premier League set to kick off after BPL
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is gearing up to launch the inaugural edition of the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) shortly after the ongoing men’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The tournament is scheduled to take place from February 8 to 15, marking an exciting new chapter for women’s cricket in Bangladesh.
Launch of Franchise-Based T20 Tournament
The idea of a franchise-based T20 tournament for women cricketers has been in the works for some time now. BCB women’s wing chairman Nazmul Abedin recently confirmed that the WBPL will feature three teams in its debut edition. The decision to start with three teams was made to ensure the quality and competitiveness of the tournament.
“To organize a quality tournament, you need a sufficient pool of talented players. Expanding beyond three teams would dilute the quality. Although we considered four teams, we decided this format was more feasible,” said Nazmul. The focus is not just on financial gains but also on raising the standard of women’s cricket in the country.
Format and Participation
Each team in the WBPL will be allowed to field one foreign player in the playing XI, adding an international flavor to the competition. The tournament will feature 15 local players per team, with the foreign player quota remaining open for recruitment.
All matches of the WBPL are scheduled to be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. This strategic decision was made to ensure a central location for all the matches and to attract a larger audience to support women’s cricket in the country.
Overcoming Challenges
Nazmul assured that the BCB is committed to addressing technical and financial issues meticulously to avoid the challenges that have plagued the men’s BPL in the past, such as unpaid salaries. The goal is to ensure a smooth and successful organization of the WBPL without facing similar hurdles.
“There were doubts about whether we could successfully organize this BPL. Many franchises left during transitions, and we took a risk. While some areas didn’t go as planned, we aim to resolve those issues moving forward,” said Nazmul, who is also a member of the BPL governing council.
Looking Ahead
The launch of the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League is a significant step towards promoting and developing women’s cricket in the country. With the support of franchises and stakeholders, the BCB is optimistic about the success of the tournament and aims to make it an annual event that showcases the talent and competitiveness of women cricketers in Bangladesh.

Building Momentum for Women’s Cricket
The introduction of the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League comes at a time when women’s cricket is gaining more recognition and support globally. With the success of other women’s T20 leagues like the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia and the Kia Super League in England, the WBPL aims to provide a platform for talented female cricketers in Bangladesh to showcase their skills and compete at a high level.
By creating a franchise-based tournament, the BCB is not only increasing the visibility of women’s cricket but also opening up opportunities for players to gain valuable experience and exposure. This format allows for a more professional setup, with teams investing in coaching staff, facilities, and player development to elevate the standard of the game.
Empowering Female Athletes
Participation in the WBPL will not only benefit the players on the field but also off the field. The exposure and recognition gained from playing in a professional league can lead to sponsorship deals, endorsements, and other opportunities that can help female cricketers build their careers and inspire the next generation of young girls to take up the sport.
Moreover, by promoting women’s cricket through initiatives like the WBPL, the BCB is sending a strong message about gender equality and empowerment. It highlights the importance of providing equal opportunities and support to female athletes to excel in their chosen field and break barriers in a traditionally male-dominated sport.
Community Engagement and Fan Support
One of the key aspects of the WBPL is the focus on attracting fans and engaging the community to rally behind women’s cricket. By hosting all matches at a central venue like the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, the BCB is creating a festival-like atmosphere where supporters can come together to cheer for their favorite teams and players.
Through promotional activities, ticket sales, and media coverage, the WBPL aims to generate interest and excitement around women’s cricket, drawing in both traditional cricket fans and a new audience eager to support the growth of the sport. This engagement can lead to increased viewership, sponsorship opportunities, and overall development of women’s cricket in Bangladesh.
Future Prospects and Sustainability
As the WBPL prepares to kick off its inaugural edition, all eyes will be on the tournament to see how it unfolds and sets the stage for the future of women’s cricket in Bangladesh. The success of this initiative will pave the way for more opportunities, partnerships, and investments in women’s cricket, ensuring its long-term sustainability and growth.
With the right support and commitment from all stakeholders, the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League has the potential to become a flagship event in the women’s cricket calendar, attracting top talent, international recognition, and paving the way for a new era of women’s cricket in Bangladesh.
