Team India has been in outstanding form throughout the current Asia Cup, upsetting longtime rivals Pakistan by 228 runs and then holding the reigning champions Sri Lanka to a paltry 213 total. India’s two victories in the Super 4 round guaranteed them a spot in the final, but the team lost by six runs to Bangladesh just before their Sunday top match versus Sri Lanka. Now, in the latest news cricketer Shubman Gill accepts his mistake.
For the match, which was contested at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the team made a number of adjustments. The squad made four changes, inserting Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Mohammed Shami, and Prasidh Krishna in the starting XI while resting the regulars. The decision didn’t yield much, as Tilak was out for a single-digit score and Suryakumar lost out on yet another chance to strengthen his argument in the 50-over format.
Cricketer Shubman Gill gets candid:
India was bowled out for 259 in 49.5 overs while chasing 266 as Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan picked out the middle-order batsman for 26(34). Even though it came in a losing effort, Shubman Gill hit his fifth ODI century, which was a bright spot for India. India continued to lose wickets at the other end, but Gill stayed strong at one end. After being eventually bowled out for 121 (133) by Mahedi Hasan in the 44th over, Axar Patel had the difficult task of leading the side home.
Following the game, Gill acknowledged that he ought to have driven the team home. The cricketer said, “When you are batting, there can be too much adrenaline and you can make a mistake. I made a mistake in my calculations. However, there was still a lot of time when I was out, and if I had batted less aggressively, we would have crossed the finish line. However, these are lessons, and fortunately, this game was not the championship, the batter noted at the post-game awards ceremony.”
Axar, who also performed admirably, was struck by a slower delivery from veteran pacer Mustafizur Rahman, which dashed India’s aspirations. Axar was dismissed for 42(34) balls in the sixth over. The final Indian pair, Shami and Krishna, could only add five more runs to India’s total as they still needed 12 runs from eight balls.
